BREAKING: Scooter Libby’s Sentence to Be Commuted

All I can say is get out your umbrellas…there will be Chris Matthews’ spittle a-flingin’ everywhere after this!

UPDATE: 8:45 PM EST - Here’s a portion of the official Presidential document:

Mr. Libby was sentenced to thirty months of prison, two years of probation, and a $250,000 fine. In making the sentencing decision, the district court rejected the advice of the probation office, which recommended a lesser sentence and the consideration of factors that could have led to a sentence of home confinement or probation.

I respect the jury’s verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.

My decision to commute his prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged. His wife and young children have also suffered immensely. He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect. The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting.

Of course, the left is falling apart. Look later for more on that.

Where Has This President Bush Been? (VIDEO)

In his live press conference today, Bush told the Democrats in no uncertain terms; if they want a fight, they’ve got one. Damnit, where has this GW been? I think a lot of the rest of the RINOs who have abandoned him and our party need to watch this presser several times over and remember what it was like way back then when they all had some balls!

From the AP story:

“If the Democrats truly do want to move forward and find the right information, they ought to accept what I proposed,” Bush said. “If scoring political points is the desire, then the rejection of this reasonable proposal will really be evident for the American people to see.”

Bush said he would aggressively fight in court any attempt to subpoena White House aides.

Bush is standing by Alberto Gonzalez, and with good reason. Gonzalez did nothing wrong. And if the dems want have “show trials,” as GW said, he will not put up with them. When asked by a reporterette whether or not Gonzalez would still have support after the hearings, Bush adamantly declared “he’s got support from me!” WOOHOO! GO GW, GO!

*BREAKING* Anna Nicole Smith Dead in Florida

This just broke on Fox, and I know there may not be a whole lot of people who care, but any time somebody dies at such a young age it’s tragic. Yet it happened today. Anna Nicole Smith was found unconscious, and recent confirmations are that she is now dead. FoxNews has the story here.

From the FoxNews piece:

Reality star Anna Nicole Smith died Thursday after collapsing at a South Florida hotel, one of her lawyers said. Smith, 39, did not respond to CPR, and her boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, was with her when she passed, her attorney, Ron Rale, told FOX News. Smith was found unresponsive Thursday in her Hard Rock Hotel room in Hollywood, Fla.

She’s had a lot of troubles, yes, and she’s also done a lot of bad things to herself. I just think it’s tragic.

BP Agent Assaulted In Prison (BREAKING NEWS)

Huge h/t to Heidi at Euphoric Reality for this sad story. What the hell is wrong with President Bush? Why won’t he pardon these two BP Agents, who were only doing their jobs? This is truly an outrage!

“Nacho was assaulted Saturday night around 2200 by about five illegal immigrants. He has multiple and severe injuries. They put him in Isolation for now, he has not been allowed to see a doctor since Saturday. They were yelling at him in Spanish, “Maten a la migra!” which means “Kill the Border Patrol agent.”

Another family member said Nacho was attacked after he fell asleep Saturday night. Assaulters went after him with repeated blows and kicks. Ramos suffered wounds to his back, shoulder, arms and head. There is concern that Agent Ramos was not given medical treatment after the incident and may not have received medical attention for up to 48 hours. An investigation is expected to be launched Tuesday.

Here’s the segment that appeared on AMW Saturday night.

>

For complete details, please read Heidi’s story here, as she will keep up-to-the-minute news on this story as it happens. This is just absolutely shameful.

Pres. Gerald Ford, 1913-2006 (VIDEO)

Today we mourn the passing of the 38th President of our United States, Gerald R. Ford. I was just in high school during his presidency, but for whatever reason, my memory of him is very positive. I don’t know why because I wasn’t a political person back then, but it just was that - a positive memory. And now at the age of 93, he’s gone.

According to the AP this morning:

Former President Gerald R. Ford, who declared “Our long national nightmare is over” as he replaced Richard Nixon but may have doomed his own chances of election by pardoning his disgraced predecessor, has died. He was 93.

The nation’s 38th president, and the only one not elected to the office or the vice presidency, died at his desert home at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

“His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country,” his wife, Betty, said in a statement.

Ford was the longest living former president, surpassing Ronald Reagan, who died in June 2004, by more than a month.

I’ve heard him referred to as “the Accidental President,” but it was no accident to me that he was our President. Pres. Ford was just unelected, but he was not “accidental.”

May you rest in peace, President Ford.

Bush & Blair Press Conference on Middle East and ISG (VIDEO)

Today President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair held a joint press conference to discuss the findings of the ISG and of the situation in the Middle East in general. There were several very interesting points of the speech, and one verbal near-fisticuffs with a reporter from the BBC.

Both Bush and Blair are very clear about one thing: failure is not an option. I don’t know how well that’s going to go over with the dems or the ISG today, but they both showed clear resolve in how they feel about the outcome for Iraq.

Here’s the exchange between the BBC reporter and Bush:

Nate Robinson, BBC News: Mr. President, the Iraq Study Group described the situation in Iraq as “grave and deteriorating.” You said that the increase in attacks is “unsettling.” That will convince many people that you’re still in denial about how bad things are in Iraq and question your sincerity about changing course.

Bush: (angrily) It’s bad in Iraq. (long pause and stare at BBC reporter)

Robinson: (nods head)

Bush: (long pause) Did that help? (laugh)

Robinson: Why did it take others to say it before you’d be willing to acknowledge it to the world?

Bush: With all due respect, I’ve been saying it a lot. I understand how tough it is, and I’ve been telling the American people how tough it is, and they know how tough it is. And the fundamental question is, ‘do we have a plan to achieve our objective?’ Are we willing to change as the enemy has changed?

What the Baker-Hamilton study has done, is it shows good ideas as to how to go forward. What our Pentagon is doing is figuring out ways to go forward; all aimed to achieve our objective. Make no mistake about it; I know how tough it is, sir. I talk to the families who (have loved ones who’ve) died (sic). I understand there’s sectarian violence. I also understand that we’re hunting down Al Qaeda on a regular basis, and we’re bringing them to justice. I understand how hard our troops are working; I know how brave the men and women who wear the uniform are; and therefore they’ll have the full support of this government. I understand what long deployments mean to wives and husbands, and mothers and fathers; particularly as we come into a holiday season. I understand. And I have made it abundantly clear how tough it is.

I also believe we’re going to succeed. I believe we’ll prevail. Not only do I know how important it is to prevail, I believe we will prevail. I understand how hard it is to prevail. But, I also want the American people to understand that if we were to fail, and one way to assure failure is just to quit, is not to adjust and to say it’s just not worth it, if we were to fail, that failed policy will come to hurt generations of Americans in the future.

And as I said in my opening statement, I believe we’re in an ideological struggle between forces that are reasonable and want to live in peace, and radicals and extremists. And when you throw into the mix a radical Shi’ia and radical Sunni trying to gain power and topple modern governments with energy, which they could use to blackmail Great Britain or America or anybody else who doesn’t kow-tow to ‘em, and a nuclear weapon in the hands of a government that would be using that nuclear weapon to blackmail to achieve political objectives, historians will look back and say “How come Bush and Blair couldn’t see the threat?” That’s what they’ll be asking. And I want to tell you, I see the threat. And I believe it is up to our governments to help lead the forces of moderation to prevail. It’s in our interests.

And one of the things that has changed for American foreign policy, is a threat overseas can now come home to hurt us. And September the 11th should be a wake-up call for the American people to understand what happens if there is violence and safe-havens in a part of the world. And what happens is, people can die here at home.

And so, no…I appreciate your question. As you can tell I feel strongly about making sure YOU understand that I understand it’s tough. But I want you to know, sir, that I believe we’ll prevail; I know we have to adjust to prevail, but I wouldn’t have our troops in harms way if I didn’t believe that: 1) it was important, and 2) we’ll succeed. Thank you.

Robinson: Prime Minister, if I may, briefly.

Blair: (laughter) You’re not going to do a follow-up are you?

(general laughter in the press corp)

Robinson: No, no…(nervous laughter)

This is toward the end of the first segment, and you can literally see the fire in Bush’s eyes. He wants Mr. Robinson to know that yes, it may be bad in Iraq, but damnit! That’s not the only thing that matters - it’s not the overall war; it’s the impact on individuals and free countries - not your narrow-minded desire to have the American President admit to something the mainstream media (and the BBC) makes sure everybody knows every day of the year.

Blair also acknowledged President Bush for being the first U.S. President ever to work toward the 2-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

It’s quite clear, and a relief to me, that this talking to Syria and Iran business is going nowhere with Bush. He said that Iran already knows what the conditions are for us to talk to them: “Abandon your desire for uranium enrichment program and build-up of nuclear weapons, and we’re at the table!” And he said the talk with Syria is even more simple: “Stop destabilizing the Senoira government” and we’ll talk! He said both countries know what it will take for us to talk with them, and we won’t talk to them before. (YAY BUSH!)

I was truly glad to hear this because in recent days I’ve felt he’d become somewhat defeatist about everything, and might swallow the whole ISG complete and adopt all 79 ISG “Commandments.”

Then a jackass from the LA Times stands up and asks President Bush that since the Baker-Hamilton Commission report is SOOOOO bipartisan and close to the Administration, shouldn’t it deserve more weight than other studies? Sit down and shaddup, you idiot! Like one reporter asked yesterday, why should Bush listen to them, who have been over to Iraq one time, over the Generals on the ground?

Feeling feisty I guess, an I-TV reporter reminded Bush the ISG Report recommended that leaders be more “candad,” and said that he was going to test Bush on that asking “Are you capable of admitting failures?”

Ack! I’m DONE with the Press! How does Tony Snow or the President do this? No wonder Bush dislikes them and stays away from them whenever he can. They’re a detestable lot of ignoramuses.

Iraq Study Group Presser (VIDEO)

“The situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating.” That’s how the report starts out, and it just goes downhill from there.

Boy, if I’ve ever heard a big pile of horse squeeze, this was probably the biggest pile ever. Today the Baker & Hamilton Commission publicly presented the contents of the Iraq Study Group to a much bemused press corp, save the LA Times and NY Times reporter. All I heard was fluff and very little substance, and not much difference than what we’ve already been doing, save for calling for the need to negotiate assistance from Syria and Iran.

Once the questioning started, it became more interesting. Major Garrett of Fox News stood up and said that after his brief overview of the report, he said he never noticed the word “victory” not one single time in the report, and asked them if one of their desired outcomes was “victory.” They replied they tried to stay away from such verbage as “stay the course,” “cut and run,” and other buzz-words like “victory.” Oh, really? Victory is a buzz-word? To our alleged consolation, they reminded us they did use the term “success.” Oh, thanks very much for that - I am now consoled. Success for whom? And for what?

Then another reporter got up and asked why the President should listen to a group of folks like them, most of whom who have only been to Iraq once, instead of the generals on the ground? The answer they give will confuse you as it did me. Lots of grandstanding, chest-puffing, and what the hell was that goofy grin on Baker when he was up there? Does he miss the spotlight? Was he enjoying the attention? Was he on ecstasy?

The next reporter reminded them that they said success could be achieved only if the country, both red and blue, could be at a consensus regarding the war on Iraq. Keep dreaming, buddy, because as long as the left-wing kooks control the Democrats, nothing short of immediate withdrawal will be satisfactory.

The ISG then pointed to themselves as an example of how a bi-partisan group could come together and unify this country as a people. Yeah, well, you were 10 people; do you think that’s really going to happen in the American public? You can read the contents of their report here.

McManus of the LA Times asked them how would they be able to basically force President Bush to comply with their recommendations? Someone said that Clinton’s former Chief of Staff, Leon Paneta, might be better suited to answer a question like that (to some laughter).

One that that struck me all the way through was I kept hearing a DNC talking point over and over, and that’s that we neeeded to find a “new way forward.” Hey! I thought this group was supposed to be bi-partisan??? Obviously got their left-side opinions from the kook fringe Kool-Aid drinkers.

Oh, and you’ll find something very interesting on this tape at about 39:08 or 39:10 in. A female reporter stands up to ask a question, yet her mic won’t work, although she tries. You can CLEARLY hear one or two on the panel say “She’s from Fox… she’s from Fox!” Only problem is, she was with the UPI. Why should it matter if she WAS from Fox?

The file is not small, and there are a couple of areas I had to edit out due to technical difficulties from the cable signal. You can watch the presser here.

FINALLY, a Republican candidate I don’t have to hold my nose to vote for… in fact, I think I’m rather excited about this.

1:32PM EST

I finally found it in print. Duncan’s going to run!

Rep. Duncan Hunter has shown little interest in seeking higher office during his 26 years in Congress. Suddenly, he is positioning himself for a presidential bid.

A Republican official said Hunter, who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, planned to announce Monday that he was considering a run for president in 2008. The announcement would allow the lawmaker to begin raising money and organize supporters in early Republican primary states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. The official didn’t want to be named ahead of Hunter’s announcement.

Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper would not comment on Hunter’s plans, other than to say that he would be holding a news conference in San Diego at 11 a.m. PST Monday regarding electoral plans for 2008.

Hunter told Fox News Channel Sunday,”I’m going to make an announcement about a national campaign in’08.”He didn’t elaborate, other than to say it would be made from the waterfront”where I started my humble career in 1980.”

Oh, and did I mention he’s against NAFTA, CAFTA? More good stuff:

Hunter, 58, became chairman of the House Armed Services Committee in 2003 _ a position he would lose should Democrats take control of the House after the Nov. 7 midterm election. By making an announcement now, he can begin raising money while still heading the committee.

The Vietnam War veteran, the recipient of a Bronze Star, has made his mark in Congress by advocating for a strong military and border security. He played a leading role in the construction of a 14-mile double fence on the U.S.-Mexico border that is nearing completion in San Diego. He co-authored legislation signed by President Bush last week that would extend the border fence to 700 miles.

Hunter voted against the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Central American Free Trade Agreement and opposed most-favored-nation status for China. This year, he was a vocal critic of a deal that gave a Dubai company control of some operations at six American ports.

Folks, I’m telling you right here and right now; I’m backing Duncan Hunter all the way! I’m SO glad we will have a strong candidate who believes in what the majority of America believes in - strong border enforcement and tough on terrorism. He may be a dark horse, but if he does announce today, I’m going to volunteer for his campaign.

Jay at Stop the ACLU is on this, too.
