Honoring Pvt. Ross McGinnis (VIDEO)

Today on Special Report, Brit highlighted the story of one very courageous hero whose parents were awarded their son’s Medal of Honor today, posthumously, at a White House ceremony. What did soldier Ross McGinnis do? He laid his body down over a grenade that was pitched into his Humvee, and he knew if he didn’t do it, his buddies would probably die, too. But McGinnis showed courage and valor above all else. Blackfive has a couple of terrific posts about McGinnis:

CENTCOM sent an email that describes McGinnis on patrol, on December 4th, standing in the turret. McGinnis was manning his armored humvee’s machine gun. His Platoon Sergeant, SFC Thomas, was the vehicle commander.

From a position above the humvee, an insurgent lobbed a grenade that arced through McGinnis’ hatch and fell to the humvee console lodging in the radio at McGinnis’ feet.

McGinnis shouted, “GRENADE! IT’S IN THE TRUCK!”

In attendance at the ceremony were those buddies whose lives he saved that day: Sergeant First Class Cedric Thomas, Staff Sergeant Ian Newland, Sergeant Lyle Buehler, and Specialist Sean Lawson.

Brit noted that McGinnis’ father remarked that Ross probably simply relied on kindergarten math: ‘he realized four is greater than one,’ but it was that one that was greater than the whole.
