FL Congressman, Mark Foley, being the chair of the caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. Republican or Democrat, I don’t give a damn. Child sexploitation is something that totally repulses me, and anybody who does this should be put under the jail! Everybody’s all over this one, and like others I say “good riddance.” What a scumbag.

Brian Ross from his ABC Blotter has the story in sick and disgusting detail. There’s even a copy of the IM chat between Foley and the then 16-year-old boy in .pdf format. (Caution: Extremely graphic and sexual in nature!)

According to Ross’ blog:

Florida Rep. Mark Foley’s resignation came just hours after ABC News questioned the congressman about a series of sexually explicit instant messages involving congressional pages, high school students who are under 18 years of age.

In Congress, Rep. Foley (R-FL) was part of the Republican leadership and the chairman of the House caucus on missing and exploited children.

He crusaded for tough laws against those who used the Internet for sexual exploitation of children.

“They’re sick people; they need mental health counseling,” Foley said.

But, according to several former congressional pages, the congressman used the Internet to engage in sexually explicit exchanges.

They say he used the screen name Maf54 on these messages provided to ABC News.

Here’s just a brief portion of the IM record:

Maf54: You in your boxers, too?
Teen: Nope, just got home. I had a college interview that went late.
Maf54: Well, strip down and get relaxed.

Another message:

Maf54: What ya wearing?
Teen: tshirt and shorts
Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.

And this one:

Maf54: Do I make you a little horny?
Teen: A little.
Maf54: Cool.

Excuse me while I go take a shower after I throw up. I can’t go any further than that. You’ll have to read the story for yourself, and the IM, if you dare. Unfortunately the Dems will have a field day with this, but at this point, Foley is neither Republican nor Democrat; he’s a sexual predator (allegedly).

Sorry for a bit of confusion...
my post above was originally drafted elsewhere...where part of the REpublican idiocy defensive response included a reference to Ted Kennedy and his Chappioquidick/Mary Jo K. (sp?) incident in 1969.

I agree... what a bullshit response... the mileage on the Ted Kennedy thing is way over. This is, basically, one more regretable and no doubt avoidable sex scandal in washington. This thing would not have even made the first section of the news if it wasnt:

about a teen aged page
about a MALE senator and MALE page
about 4 weeks before elections.

It is a miserable error in judgement, compounded by stupid gestures and efforts to minimize it and/or overblow it (pick your side of the aisle)...

HOWEVER... it is NOT where our attention should be focused (much less compared to something with facts long obscured that happened in 1969.)

The North Koreans have nukes (probably). The IRanians are working hard on theirs as well. Terrorists are still trying to strike again in the US of A. Our troops are deployed overseas and Congress seems to be forgetting who sent them, that they continue to need support during and afterwards, regardless of how well it fits into your damn district budget and interests. Maybe I am delirious, but I SWEAR I heard President Bush tell the country that this was going to take years, cost lives, and be a slow process. No one promised a resolution to the worlds problems in 16 months or whatever. The immigration problem continues. And we are focused on pornographic instant messages? He resigned (on a letter that was typed for him by Rep Reynolds office!). he is seeking therapy/cover/rehabilitation. Both are probably reviewing book and movie offers (thanks Holllywood!)

ATTENTION CONGRESS AND SENATORS: REGAIN YOUR FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE, PLEASE!
