Exposing the Lunacy of the Rap, Hip-Hop & Gang Culture

Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center today wrote a brilliant piece in Townhall.com about the glorification of rap “music” and those who spew it out for play on the airwaves. This glorification of the gory, greedy lifestyles of the gang culture have been assaulting us for a long time now.

Tookie.jpgThe most recent exposition of this was the Hollywood love affair with long-time Crips gang member and co-founder, Tookie Williams. They went to great lengths to get Americans (and the world) to feel sorry for this career thug, overlooking the victims of his crimes, to which, I might add, he confessed to killing early on. He was convicted of the murders in 1981 of Albert Lewis Owens, 25, Tsai-Shen Yang, 63, her husband Yen-Yi Yang, 63, and their daughter Ye-Chen Lin, 43 - all murdered in 1979.

Brent Bozell states the case beautifully:

Turn on a pop radio station today and you’re likely to get an earful of stupidity. I don’t mean the kind of innocent dumb pop song of the old days. I mean songs that glorify lust and greed stupidly.

One of the biggest radio hits right now is Nelly’s song “Grillz,” all about the goofy new rapper trend of “grills,” diamond-encrusted dentures over a full set of teeth, like the one worn by his rapping partner on the song, a white “artist” named Paul Wall. At its low point, Nelly urges the audience to “rob da jewelry store and tell ‘em make me a grill.”

For lust and greed, it’s hard to top “My Humps,” by the Black Eyed Peas. The man in the song asks what his lady’s going to do with “all that junk” in her trunk. She replies she will get him “love drunk on my hump … my lovely lady lumps.” Why seduce him? For greed. She lists the fashionably expensive brands he will buy her: Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi and Donna Karan, and jeans by Seven and True Religion. Those designer-label jeans at fancy department stores go for $175 to $300 a pair. It’s what stupid people buy.

But there’s competition from the new song from B4L called “Laffy Taffy,” which has all the usual oral-sex metaphors (I won’t bother with examples), and the chorus asks the girl to shake her “laffy taffy” about eight times in every chorus. It’s infected with a serious case of stupid.

But the dumbest rapper of the new year is Kanye West, who is boldly going to that final frontier of egomania, the Jesus comparison. He’s pictured on the cover of the new Rolling Stone magazine with a crown of thorns on his head and blood on his face, a persecuted martyr. The cover reads “The Passion of Kanye West.” That’s pretty bold for a millionaire superstar rapper. Perhaps it’s a crucifixion at the hands of people who took issue with him — how dare they! — for ruining a Red Cross TV hurricane fundraiser with his wild, divisive bleatings about white racism, soldiers shooting at blacks, and President Bush’s disdain for black people.

I just don’t understand it all. When are we going to wake up as a nation and realize that our country is going to hell in a proverbial handbasket, as long as society accepts this crap as the norm? We not only have the garbage that the rappers spew out, but we have these games now - like Grand Theft Auto,where GTA SA.jpgyou can get points and extra ammo for killing cops, and get rewarded with sex with prostitutes for going to higher levels of the game, etc., ad nauseum. The list goes on and on, and painfully on.

The bastardization of our culture is rapidly taking over, and we, as what Nixon called “The Silent Majority,” need to take a stand and denounce this LOUDLY and COMPLETELY! We WILL NOT STAND for this normalization of cultural ideas that should not be allowed in our society. We will do so only at the polls in 2006 and 2008 - and by letting your elected representatives know how we feel. We can be “silent” no more - we have to act, and act now!

    I do have to agrre with you on all the violence needing to stop. Like 50 cent and Game there's no need for it. But their music is an expression and they have freedom of speech. So it really doesn't matter what anyone says their music will come out. We do all we can to censor it like their music vidoes and the radio. But you have to understand that kids are offered the choice of an edited CD. What do you want an age limit on a CD with A Parental Advisory Warning?

    I do, in fact, like LL Cool J. And Tyrell, I grew up listening to Kool Moe Dee, Kool & the Gang, the GAP Band, Sly & the Family Stone, Dazz Band, Roger, Cameo, ZAPP, Prince, Morris Day & the Time, Janet Jackson, the Jacksons, etc., etc., etc. None of these people glorified gang-banging, shooting cops, treating women as "ho's," doing drugs, or other stupid stuff like that. They actually made good danceable music.

    As far as Slipknot goes, I have no clue who they are. I do not listen to grunge rock either - it makes no sense to me, and I don't consider it "music," much like I don't consider rap to be "music."

    Even if this Slipknot talked about killing themselves, none of their entourage went through radio station buildings shooting at people, and shooting themselves is nothing like shooting a stranger or others.

    P.S. "Breakin'" and "Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo" were two of my favorite movies. I loved that music AND the dancing. It was all positive, and did also reflect growing up in hard times.

    I've got another question. If only vulgar rappers are present then what is LL Cool J? I respect your views but not all hip hop is bad. What about all that screaming emo music? Or what about bands like Slipknot who talk about killing themselves? Please respond back.

    I have a question. Do you honestly listen to hip-hop, Because if you did you would understand that not all hip-hop is the same. Majority of Hip-Hop is about a story, struggles that only we see and go through. Stop being so ignorant, if it bothers you that much then dont listen to it. Have a nice day.

    First of all, I don't know that Elvis said that. And even if you could point me to a direct quote from him that he said that, you still don't have a valid argument.

    If Elvis did make that statement, he certainly didn't make it the theme of his music. So, he wasn't "idolized" for his degradation of blacks. Hip-hop artists & rappers, however, ARE idolized for their views and ideals about "bitches" and "ho's."

    My name is Tyrell, I want to respond to the comment about Elvis calling women Bitches or a ho's. He may have never called a woman a bitch but he is recorded saying the only thing niggers can do for him is shine his shoes and buy his albums. So does that make him less ignorant????     Ready James? Here's my reply.... Timothy McVeigh only blew up the Federal Murrah Building once... and 168 people died. Does that make people like him less dangerous?

    Your positions and lack of societal acumen deserve no response. Hence, there will be no more.

    P.S. The key marked "Shift" will make capital letters when pressed in conjunction with individual letters. Also, don't be afraid of any of the punctuation keys - they might make you appear at least a smidgen more intelligent than you currently do.

    P.S.S. Yes, it was assumed "Rock" was ruining our country, but that was because the people who danced to it swiveled their hips, as opposed to rappers who SHOOT from the hips! And, no I've never heard of the groups you say are part of hip-hop - and that's exactly my point. Only the ones who are vulger, mean-spirited, and promote violence are the most famous and stood up as the "role models" of the hip-hop world.

    Elvis never did a drive-by shooting, and I don't recall he ever called a woman a "bitch" or a "ho."

    Didn't rock used to be ruining our society too!but we eventually decided it wasn't. and all hip hop isnt gangster! Have you ever heard of E-40 or Pharrell? kj52? there is more to hip hop then violence! gangster rap is already fading away anyway. And the people on the streets dont know any other way to live.

    Hip hop IS ruining our society, James! How many times do we have to hear about shootings in studios or radio stations when Rap & Hip Hop artists appear? Bill Cosby has it right. If you are saying things like "where you at?", "who be dat?" etc., you are NOT going to go on to do big things in your life. Only a small handfull of Hip Hop artists make it, and there are so many who idolize them and try to be them, but sadly never will, and get caught up in the gang/thug lifestyle in the meantime trying to maintain "street cred."

    What do I know about hip hop? I worked the streets for many years as a beat cop, so I know what Hip Hop is doing to both our young white & black communities.

    And I don't care if that picture of Kanye West was to promote his song or not. Dare I ask if you remember that dozens of people have been killed, kidnapped, tortured, etc., in European countries for merely depicting an image of the "prophet" Mohammed? Where do you think the photog of this Rolling Stone cover would be if he had done the same thing to an image of their beloved prophet.

    You can thank God and your lucky stars that we live in such a free country that we can be whatever we want, do whatever we want, but it all comes with responsibility. Conversely, if we waste our natural abilities away on crap like Hip Hop, we can also be the worst we can be, do the worst we can do, and become failures in life.

    Sink or swim - freedom gives you that choice. And if you choose to live the Hip Hop lifestyle, 99% of the people will become a failure in life.

    And lastly...the reasearch is on the front pages of newspapers and magazines every day.

    I think it's stupid you think that hip hop is ruining society. And that Picture of Kanye west represents his song Jesus Walks! Honestly what do you really know about Hip hop. And Yeah tookie did some bad things bu he also helped alot of people. So you need to readjust your mind and maybe do some research about what you're talking about!
